NOW HIRING: Undergraduate Marketing Student Assistant

The Blum Center on Poverty, Inequality, and Democracy is a Center for campus-wide scholarly discussion, student engagement, and programming that examines the mutually reinforcing relationships between rising levels of structural inequality and the corrosion of democracy in the United States and globally. Our work focuses on how deepening socio-economic inequality has weakened democratic capacities and commitments, and how democracy can be mobilized to address these trends.
 
The Blum Center is recruiting an undergraduate Marketing Student Assistant to work together with our staff, as well as another graduate and undergraduate student, to advance thinking and engagement on poverty, inequality, and democracy.
 
The main duties of this Marketing Student Assistant will focus on the following:
  • Implement and update the Blum Center's marketing and outreach plan for 2020-21 by reviewing the impact of the Center's outreach efforts on a regular basis and suggesting improvements where needed;
  • Create the content and designs for Blum Center weekly social media (Instagram, Facebook) and website posts;
  • Lead the planning, writing, and sending of the Blum Center monthly e-newsletter; and
  • Lead the creation and design of Blum Center online and print promotional materials, e.g. for Blum Center events, academics and initiatives, for the Center itself, etc.
 
While the above duties will be the primary focus of this position, the student assistant will also assist with the following Blum Center programming:
  • Contribute to the development of 1-2 podcast episodes;
  • Help plan, organize, and facilitate discussion groups on related themes; and
  • Assist with other Blum Center events, initiatives, and administrative work where needed.
 
Desired Skills and Experience
  • Experience with creating and/or contributing to the development and implementation of a marketing plan
  • Experience contributing/managing a newsletter (or similar product)
  • Experience implementing different types of marketing campaigns (e.g., event-based, initiative level) using different marketing channels (e.g., social media, print, website)
  • Experience translating complex subject matter into accessible language and/or infographics
  • Experience with MailChimp and Canva
 
Requirements
  • A registered UCSB undergraduate student in good academic standing
  • Able to work 8-10 hrs/wk throughout the academic year (with possible extension into the following year)
